Prepare yourselves for a sonic experience unlike any you have experienced before.
This exciting and very unusual ensemble consists of eight cellists performing works that range from Bach to Tavarez, Boccherini to Arvo Pärt, Piatigorsky to Bernstein and many others, covering music from traditional classical to tango and beyond.
CELLOPHONICS has been in existence for 15 years and has toured annually around New Zealand during that time. The group consists of the University of Waikato cello students of New Zealand’s leading cellist, James Tennant, who has been performing solo and chamber music concerts around New Zealand and the world over the past 45 years. He has also arranged numerous works for this ensemble which have been played by such international cellists as Julian Lloyd Webber, Li-Wei Qin, Wolfgang Schmidt and Philippe Muller.
Many of the past members of CELLOPHONICS have gone on to great international careers and competition success, including Edward King and Santiago Canon Valencia, who just received the 2nd prize in the International Tchaikovsky Cello Competition. This year the group welcomes past student and featured artist Matthias Balzat, who is fast moving along the career path towards international fame and success. So come one come all to experience the warm sonic tomes of the most expressive of all instruments, the Cello, as performed by these nationally recognised artists.
