New and Old with Jade at the Pah

Saturday 17 August, 6pm

The Jade String Quartet
Violin – Miranda Adams
Violin – William Hanfling
Viola – Robert Ashworth
Cello – Edith Salzmann

The Jade String Quartet returns to the Pah Homestead for a concert of new and old, a world premiere by Jonathan Besser, and recent compositions by young Kiwi composer Kirsten Strom. We pair these delightful compositions with famous works by Joseph Haydn and Bedřich Smetana.

Composer/Pianist Jonathan Besser was born in New York City and studied composition in New York at the Mannes College of Music. Resident in New Zealand since 1974, he has created acoustic and electronic music in collaboration with leading writers, choreographers, musicians, artists and film makers.

Kirsten Strom is a young NZ composer, conductor and creative writer. Her work has been performed internationally, commissioned, and aired on national radio. She looks forward to attending the Royal Academy of Music, London for a Master of Music in Composition later in 2019.

Kirsten Strom – Two pieces for String Quartet
Waiting (2015)
This piece was a gift for the composer’s sister Jasmine’s wedding.
Purity (2014)
This piece emerged from the idea that a single note can hold as much beauty as an orchestra. Sometimes all that is needed is simplicity.

Jonathan Besser – Two pieces for String Quartet
The September String Quartet (Sept 2018)  *World Premiere*
This is a piece that uses my ‘Chromatic Chaconne’ technique of composing, a technique which I began to compose with in 2017. This is a new kind of Atonal music, as there’s no home key or chord.
The Gimel String Quartet (March 2019)
This is short work that uses my Gimel technique of composition – Gimel is the 3rd letter in the Hebrew alphabet, and the structure of the piece is determined by the number 3. I wanted to create a piece of great beauty.

Josef Haydn – String Quartet Op 64 No 6 in E flat major (1790)
This quartet is the last of Haydn’s 12 “Tost” quartets.

Bedřich Smetana – String Quartet No. 1 in e minor, From My Life (1876)
The quartet spans a wide range of distinctive music from Bohemian dance in the polka to a tender love song to his departed first.
